Doktora Giraffa
This time in Guna Yala, we visited a
“sight” that hardly any tourist knows:
The Nargana hospital. The reason was
that two fellow sailors had severe
diarrhea. At reception, we were already
greeted by Doktora Giraffa.

Sailing has the image of freedom. But what does this freedom feel like? In “FREEDOM ON A SAILBOAT – AN ILLUSION?” I try to find out what freedom ultimately does to us. There are people who make history with their yearning for freedom, for example adventurers like Felix Baumgartner or Reinhold Messner. History can also be written through films. In “MY NAME IS BOND, JAMES BOND” I describe the environment in which Sir Sean Connery, THE James Bond, lived.

The opposite of sea time is “LAND TIME – LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.” Or not. Land time with a boat is probably the most unpleasant aspect of a sailor’s life (apart from disasters, but more on that another time). My theory, which I describe using an example in “SAILORS WITH A SIMILAR MINDSET,” is that sailors think similarly to other people with certain hobbies.

The difference between “seeing” and “discovering” is about as great as that between a thunderstorm and a hurricane (yes, I know – not every analogy holds true). Discovering new things at sea requires, among other things, good weather forecasts. “FOUL-WEATHER GEAR OR SWIM TRUNKS” highlights the importance of acquiring background knowledge about weather.

New Providence – Bahamas
We spend our day off taking a walk through the Lyford Cay estate on New Providence. We’re impressed by the British elegance of the luxurious clubhouse next to the golf course.

Mystical Mangroves
As soon as we enter the mangrove forest, a mystical silence surrounds us. The sounds of the surf are swallowed up.

We’re going to make a long-held dream come true and sail into the Pacific. You’ll find our reasons and a brief description of the sailing area in “NEW HORIZONS”. Our new cruising grounds feel like an open-air zoo: sea lions, rays, whales, turtles, colorful coral fish, … But first we’ll be crossing the Panama Canal. Another highlight.

We survived storms, hurricanes, pirates, technical failures, … at sea. “WE SURVIVED DISASTERS” provides a brief overview. A thought about how—if you believe the media—we’re always just about to face the next disaster, which never actually comes. We’re waiting for a fellow sailor who isn’t coming either because of his ship’s “LIST”.
